How Money Tracker works, step by step. Stuck on something this guide doesn't answer?
Write to meGetting started
Money Tracker keeps all your money in one place: cash, cards, savings, stocks, crypto, property and debts, adding up to one net worth, with spending, budgets and goals beside it.
It runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later, and natively on Mac with macOS 15 or later. There is no account to create. It syncs through your own iCloud.
The first launch asks what you want from the app, what you own and your main currency, then helps you add a first account and a first transaction, and shows your starting net worth, followed by the PRO offer. You can skip it at any point.
Finding your way around
On iPhone there are four tabs and an Add button:
- Home — net worth, your accounts and their charts. The gear at the top left opens Settings.
- Insights — this period compared with the one before.
- Transactions — every transaction, with filters, search and charts.
- Plan — budgets, recurring transactions and goals.
- Add — a new transaction from anywhere.
On Mac, and on iPad when the window is wide, the same sections sit in a sidebar, with Settings as its own item. On Mac, ⌘N adds a transaction.
Home and net worth
The top of Home shows your Net Worth, or your Assets or Liabilities alone. Net worth is everything you own (liquid and non-liquid) minus what you owe. Tap the figure to hide it behind dots, for example in public; it shows again after the app restarts.
Below it are three charts: the value over time, a pie by category (tap a slice to drill in) and, with PRO, a breakdown by currency. Pick the period with D, W, M, Y, Max or Custom, step back with the arrows, and drag along the chart to read any day.
Your accounts are grouped as Liquid, Non-Liquid, Liabilities and Archived. Tap one to open it.
Accounts
Adding an account
Tap + at the top of Home (on first launch, tap one of the empty-screen prompts).
- Choose the type:
- Liquid — cash, cards, stocks, metals, crypto, bonds.
- Non-Liquid — real estate, a car, a business, land, collectibles, watches, art and more.
- Liability — a mortgage, a loan, credit card debt.
- Pick a Category, or add your own.
- For stocks, ETFs, funds and crypto, use Search Ticker to link the account to a live price, and enter your Purchase Price to see profit and loss.
- Give it a Name & Icon and an Icon Color. Emoji and brand logos are part of PRO.
- Enter the Amount and its currency. The keypad works as a calculator.
- Set the Date the balance is from.
Managing an account
Open the account and tap …:
- Add Transaction (for a liability, Add Payment).
- Update Value — set today’s value, such as a new valuation of a house. The difference is logged as an adjustment.
- Transfer — move money to another account.
- Edit Asset or Edit Liability — change any field.
- Change Currency (not for ticker accounts).
- Archive — hide the account under Archived, either taking it out of your totals or keeping it in them and in chart history. Count in Totals switches that later. Unarchive brings it back.
- Delete — removes the account and all its transactions for good.
A ticker account shows its market card: average buy price, profit and loss, return, and net asset value for funds.
Transactions
Adding a transaction
Tap Add (or + in an account). Then:
- Choose the direction at the top: decrease or increase (for a liability, new debt or payment).
- Pick the account.
- Type the amount. The keypad does sums such as 100+50*2. Tap the currency to log in another currency; it is converted for you. With PRO, the % button logs a percentage change, such as a 5% revaluation.
- Pick a category from the quick chips or More.
- Set the date with the arrows or the picker.
- Add a Merchant and a Note if you like. Money Tracker learns which category goes with each merchant and suggests it next time.
- Use the three icons at the bottom to attach a Receipt, a Location, or to switch Budget off for this transaction.
With Budget off, the transaction still counts in your balance and in Insights, but not in budgets.
For a stock or crypto account, enter the Purchase Price or Sell Price; the quantity is worked out for you.
Receipts (PRO)
Tap Receipt, then:
- Scan with Camera — the system scanner, up to 5 pages (iPhone and iPad).
- Choose Photo or Choose File — a picture or a PDF.
Money Tracker reads the shop, total and date on the device and fills them in. Tap a filled receipt to view it, share it or Remove Receipt. You can also share a receipt photo to Money Tracker from any app’s share sheet, then open Money Tracker to pick the account.
Location
Tap Location and choose a place from Nearby or search for one. Choose on Map, then Use This Location, drops your own pin. Location is read only when you log a purchase.
Editing, moving and deleting
Tap a transaction to edit it. You can move it to another account (except the account’s starting value). To delete it, use the bin in the editor and confirm. Deleting one side of a transfer asks whether to delete both sides.
The Transactions tab
- Charts: Summary, Breakdown by category, and Budget.
- Period: the same chips as Home.
- Filters: account, account type, direction (increase, decrease, transfer, starting value), category and subcategory, and merchant.
- Search: matches merchant, note, place, category, account, and the first digits of an amount (“269” finds 269, 2 690 and 26 900).
A paperclip marks a transaction with a receipt.
Transfers
Open the account you’re moving money from, tap … › Transfer, pick the destination and amount, and save. Between currencies the rate is shown. Transfers never count in budgets, since the money stays yours.
Merchants
Settings › Merchants lists every shop you pay, sorted by Top spend, Recent or Name. Tap one to give it a category: this rewrites its past purchases and every new one. Show transactions lists everything paid there.
Places
Settings › Places shows your purchases on a map. Colour the pins by Categories or Accounts, filter by account, category or merchant, and narrow the time with the slider.
With PRO, Route Between Purchases draws your stops in the order you paid, walking or driving, and opens the route in Apple Maps or Google Maps. A single place also opens in Waze or Citymapper.
Budgets
Plan › Budgets › +:
- Name it and set the limit and its currency.
- Choose Expenses or Income (a target to reach).
- Set the Reset Period: weekly, monthly, yearly or custom dates, with the day it resets.
- Choose which accounts count: All Accounts, an Account Type, an Account Category or a Specific Account.
- Narrow it with Filter by Category and Filter by Merchant, or leave things out with Exclude Accounts, Exclude Categories and Exclude Merchants.
- Turn on Notify Me to hear when 50%, 25%, 10% and 5% are left, and when you go over.
A budget’s screen shows what is used and left, days left, the daily budget and your daily average, and whether you’ll stay within the limit at this pace. Include upcoming transactions adds recurring payments still to come. You can pause, resume, edit and reorder budgets.
A transaction doesn’t count toward a budget when its Budget switch is off, its account is archived, it is a transfer, or it doesn’t match the budget’s filters.
Goals
Plan › Goals › +:
- Name the goal and set the Target Amount.
- Under Track Progress Based On, choose Total Net Worth or one account (or create a new one).
- Set the Start Date and, if you want one, a Target Date.
- With PRO, add a background photo.
The goal’s screen shows progress over time, what is left, how much you need per day and per month, and when you’ll get there at this pace. A goal completes itself when it reaches 100%.
Recurring transactions
Plan › Recurring › + for salary, rent, subscriptions or anything that repeats:
- Frequency: daily, weekly, every two weeks, monthly, quarterly, yearly, every two years, or custom (every so many days, weeks, months or years).
- Account, direction, amount (or a percentage with PRO), category, merchant and note.
- Starts and an optional End Date.
Upcoming payments appear in your transactions with their date, and become real when the day comes. They are posted when you open the app, so a payment due overnight shows up the next time you open it.
The list’s summary shows your average month of income and expenses. Sort by date or amount, and filter by account or direction. A reminder arrives the day before each payment, unless you turn off Settings › Notifications › Recurring reminders.
Insights
Insights compares your Spending or Income for this Week, Month, Quarter or Year with the one before, or two periods you choose with Custom comparison.
See what changed by Transactions (categories and subcategories) or by Accounts, and which Merchants moved most. Tap any row for its day-by-day chart and totals, then Show transactions to jump to exactly those transactions.
Logging purchases automatically
On iPhone, Settings › Transaction Automation sets up two ways to log without typing. Both run through Apple’s Shortcuts app.
Apple Pay
Every tap of a Wallet card at a terminal logs itself, with its amount, merchant and place.
- In Shortcuts, open Automation, tap + and choose Wallet (“When I tap a Wallet Card or Pass”). Keep Any Card, choose Run Immediately, and turn Notify off.
- Add the action Log Transaction.
- For Amount, choose Select Variable, pick Transaction, tap it again and choose Amount.
- Set Direction to Expense, Account to Transaction › Card or Pass, and Merchant to Transaction › Merchant.
- Turn off Confirm Before Saving and Show When Run.
Name your accounts after the bank as Wallet shows it, so each card finds its account. With several currencies on one card, name them like Bank GBP, Bank USD and Bank EUR, and the charged currency picks the right one.
It works for payments at a terminal, not for Apple Pay inside apps or on the web. Without a signal, a payment can arrive late or without an amount; a notification then asks you to fill it in. An amount of 0 usually means Amount is set to Shortcut Input instead of Transaction › Amount.
Action button or Back Tap
One press logs an expense. Build a shortcut with Log Transaction, set Amount to Ask Each Time, and turn off Confirm Before Saving and Show When Run. Then put it on the Action Button in the Settings app, or under Accessibility › Touch › Back Tap on any other iPhone.
Siri and Shortcuts
Ask Siri, or use these actions in Shortcuts.
- Log Transaction — “Add an expense to Money Tracker”, “Add income to Money Tracker”, “Log a transaction in Money Tracker”.
- Scan Receipt — “Scan a receipt in Money Tracker”.
- Check Net Worth — “What’s my net worth in Money Tracker”.
- Check Spending — “How much did I spend in Money Tracker”: today, this week, this month, last month or this year, optionally by category.
- Transfer Money — “Move money between accounts in Money Tracker”.
- Check Upcoming Payments — “What’s due in Money Tracker”.
- Check Budget — “How much is left in my Money Tracker budget”.
- Check Goal — “How far am I from my goal in Money Tracker”.
Log Transaction asks you to confirm by default, in case Siri mishears a number. Accounts, budgets and goals also appear in Spotlight search.
Widgets and controls
Touch and hold a widget, then Edit Widget, to set it up. All widgets are free, on iPhone and iPad.
- Overview — net worth, one account or a category, over a week to all time. Home Screen in small, medium and large, and Lock Screen. Overview Chart and Overview & Chart are Lock Screen variants with a sparkline.
- Budget — what is left in a budget. Home Screen and Lock Screen.
- Goal — progress toward a goal. Home Screen and Lock Screen.
- Quick Add — logs an expense or income in one tap from up to three amounts you use most. Home Screen, small and medium. It is saved the next time you open the app.
Controls for Control Center, the Lock Screen and the Action button (iOS 18 or later): Money Tracker, Add transaction and Scan receipt. Pressing and holding the app icon offers Add transaction, Scan receipt and Tip Calculator.
Prices and exchange rates
Stock, fund and crypto prices and exchange rates come from Yahoo Finance; only ticker symbols and currency codes are sent. Prices refresh when you open the app, if more than five minutes have passed; exchange rates refresh once an hour. Without a connection the last known prices are used and marked as not updated.
Sync, backup and export
iCloud sync
With iCloud on, everything, receipts and goal photos included, syncs to every iPhone, iPad and Mac on your Apple Account, through your own iCloud. A header background is set on each device. Settings › About shows when data last came from and went to iCloud.
If iCloud is off for the app, unavailable or full, a banner says your data is on this device only. Deleting the app then loses anything iCloud doesn’t have. Check Data Integrity in About merges duplicates and repairs recurring transactions; the same check runs on every launch.
Backup and restore
Settings › About › Back Up All Data saves one file with your accounts, transactions, categories, recurring transactions, budgets, goals and settings. Receipt images and goal photos are not included. Restore from Backup adds what is in the file: existing records are updated and nothing is deleted.
Export to a spreadsheet
Settings › About › Export Transactions (CSV) saves every transaction up to today with its date, time, merchant, amount, currency, category, account, note, place and map link, ticker, quantity and price, and whether it counts in budgets. In countries that write decimals with a comma, it uses semicolons so Excel opens it correctly.
Settings
- PRO — your plan, and Restore Purchases.
- General:
- Theme, Language and Primary Currency.
- Header Background (PRO) — a colour or photo behind the header on Home, Transactions and Insights.
- Default Period, and Period Mode: Last counts back from today (the last 30 days), Calendar follows the calendar (this month so far). This is the usual reason two screens show different totals.
- Hide Percentages and Haptic Touch.
- Notifications — reminders to review your accounts (daily, weekly or monthly, at a time you choose, including the last day of the month) and recurring reminders. Budget alerts are set in each budget.
- Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID, or Passcode, depending on the device) — locks Money Tracker whenever you leave it, including in the app switcher. A device passcode must be set first. Widgets, Siri answers and Spotlight results are not behind the lock.
- Tip Calculator and Interest Calculator (simple or compound).
- Accounts, Transactions, Merchants, Places — your categories and lists. Drag to reorder, tap to rename, and add subcategories. Deleting a category in use lets you clear it or move its transactions.
- Transaction Automation (iPhone).
- Rate Money Tracker, More Apps and About, with sync status, backup, export, the privacy policy and the app version.
Mac
Money Tracker on Mac is a full native app with a sidebar. The Mac has no camera receipt scanning (Choose Photo and Choose File work), no widgets or controls, no share sheet and no Apple Pay automation. The app lock appears on Macs with Touch ID.
Money Tracker PRO
Free, you get one place for all your money: two accounts of any kind, one budget, one goal and two recurring transactions, plus everything else: transactions, Insights, Places, widgets, Siri, Apple Pay automation, iCloud sync, backup, export and the calculators. If you installed Money Tracker before the free plan changed, you keep five accounts, two of them with tickers.
PRO adds:
- unlimited accounts, budgets, goals and recurring transactions,
- percentage transactions,
- receipt scanning,
- account icons with emoji and brand logos,
- goal photos,
- the currency breakdown chart,
- header backgrounds,
- routes between purchases on the map.
PRO is a yearly plan with a free first week if your Apple Account is eligible, or a monthly plan. The PRO screen shows the prices in your country. If PRO ends, nothing is deleted: everything over the free limits stays, and only adding more is paused. A header background is hidden until PRO is back.
Restoring PRO
Open Settings, tap the PRO card, then Restore Purchases at the bottom. Use the Apple Account you subscribed with.
Cancelling
In the Settings app on iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Money Tracker. PRO stays on until the end of the period you paid for. To avoid being charged, cancel at least a day before the free week ends.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no server holding your finances. Your data lives on your devices and in your own iCloud.
Does it sync between iPhone, iPad and Mac?
Yes. With iCloud on, everything syncs to every device on the same Apple Account, receipts and goal photos included. Settings › About shows when it last synced.
What is free and what is PRO?
Free gives you two accounts of any kind, one budget, one goal and two recurring transactions, with transactions, Insights, widgets, Siri, Apple Pay automation and sync. If you installed before the free plan changed, you keep five accounts, two of them with tickers. PRO removes the limits and adds receipt scanning, percentage transactions, custom icons, goal photos, the currency chart, header backgrounds and routes on the map.
Can I log purchases automatically?
Yes, on iPhone. Settings › Transaction Automation walks you through a Shortcuts automation that logs every Apple Pay tap at a terminal, with its amount, merchant and place. You can also log an expense with the Action button or Back Tap.
Why does a transaction not count in my budget?
A transaction is left out of budgets when its Budget switch is off, its account is archived, it is a transfer, or it does not match the budget’s accounts, categories, merchants or exclusions. It still counts in your balance and in Insights.
Why do two screens show different totals?
Check Settings › General › Period Mode. Last counts back from now (the last 30 days), Calendar follows the calendar (this month so far), so the same “month” can cover different days.
When does a recurring payment appear?
Recurring payments show ahead with their date and become real when the day comes. They are posted when you open the app, so a payment due overnight appears the next time you open it.
How current are stock prices and exchange rates?
They come from Yahoo Finance. Prices refresh when you open the app, if more than five minutes have passed, and exchange rates once an hour. Without a connection the last known prices are used.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Settings › About › Export Transactions (CSV) creates a spreadsheet, and Back Up All Data saves everything to a single file you can restore later.
How do I restore PRO?
Open Settings, tap the PRO card, then tap Restore Purchases at the bottom. Use the Apple Account you subscribed with.
How do I cancel?
In the Settings app on iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Money Tracker. PRO stays on until the end of the period you paid for, and nothing you made is deleted.
